The Klondike region, located in northwestern Canada, and east of the border with Alaska, is famous for having been the scene of the so-called Klondike Gold Rush, which began in 1896. Nearly 100,000 gold prospectors arrived at the site. attracted by reports that local miners had found the precious metal.

The Klondike Gold Rush, also known as the Yukon Gold Rush, was based on prospecting for gold along the Klondike River. It is estimated that around 12.5 million ounces of gold were mined. Luck accompanied some of the explorers, who managed to gather a small fortune in a very short time, while most of the seekers did not have the same luck.

On the 125th anniversary of the discovery of gold in Klondike, the Royal Canadian Mint issues a commemorative one dollar coin destined for circulation to remember that the “Klondike Gold Rush” was a boost in the rapid development of the Yukon, which became the territory officially on June 13, 1898. Although it also had a negative impact on the indigenous peoples who inhabited these lands for millennia; their displacement, the alteration of their culture and traditional ways of life and the damage to the environment, are also legacies of the «last great gold rush».

The reverse of the circulating dollar coin commemorating the 125th anniversary of the discovery of Klondike gold has been designed by artist Jori van der Linde. It represents the four people credited with the discovery of gold in the Rabbit Creek area, which started the Klondike Gold Rush in August 1896.

An image appears on the side of a hill that represents the place where the Tr'ondëk Hwëch'in Nation moved when it was displaced by the influx of gold prospectors, (in one version of the coin this space appears colored and in the other no). The inscription "KLONDIKE" and the dates "1896" and "2021" complete the design.

The obverse of both coins, the work of Susanna Blunt, shows the usual image of Queen Elizabeth II, as in the rest of Canadian circulation coins.
