The Bank of Hungary (Magyar Nemzeti Bank) announces the issuance of two coins with the same design, to commemorate the 235th anniversary of the birth of Maurice Benyovszky, the great Hungarian explorer of the 18th century. The coins designed by the artist Gábor Kereszthury, have two facials, 2,000 and 10,000 florins, minted in cupro-nickel in BU quality, and 925 silver in Proof quality, respectively.

Maurice Benyovszky (1741-1786) is one of the world's greatest travelers and explorers. Throughout his life, he explored four different parts of the world and, thanks to his geographical discoveries, entered the history of various countries. He is recognized for different achievements, including the first account of the geography, ethnography and zoology of the Kamchatka Peninsula, as well as the detailed description of Taiwan promoting its knowledge in Europe.

Benyovszky maintained exceptional diplomatic relations, meeting often with the leading political figures of the 18th century. The time he spent on the island of Madagascar was a decisive part of his life. On the island, he tried to encourage people living in different tribes to achieve peace without having to use weapons.

The central motif on the obverse of the coin shows a frigate sailing through a rough sea, referring to its main means of transport in the 18th century. In the background, there is a section of a schematic representation of a compass that refers to the travels of the globetrotter. On the edge, in a semicircular upper legend, are the mandatory design elements of collector coins: starting slightly to the right of the horizontal center line, the year of issue "2021", the mint mark "BP." and the inscription "MAGYARORSZÁG" (Hungary), as well as, after a stylized turn symbol, the designations "10,000" or "2,000" and the letters "FT".

In the center of the reverse is the portrait of Count Maurice Benyovszky. In the background is a section of a map showing the years and itineraries of Benyovszky's travels, including Madagascar. To the right of the portrait, in a horizontal position, are the years of the explorer's birth and death, '1741-1786'. On the edge of the collector's coin, in an upper semicircular legend, appears «GRÓF BENYOVSZKY MÓRIC» (Count Maurice Benyovszky), in the lower part, in the center, you can see the master mark of the coin designer Gábor Kereszthury.
