The issuance of coins with animal motifs has always been a recurring theme among the different Mint Houses around the world, mainly due to the good reception they tend to have among collectors. For a few years, with the arrival of the euro, there was a period when they seemed to have forgotten a bit about them. The broadcast of the Austrian series Colorful Creatures and its innovative commitment to animals in color and the fact that they glowed in the dark, again promoted the representation of animals on coins, "spiced" with colors and other techniques very popular in the present. Following the trail, there are already several mints that mint very similar coins, today I am going to present the last one.

Under the name of "Dinosaurs of Portugal", the first coin of the series that features the "Dinheirosaurus lourinhanensis" is issued tomorrow, September 21, this was a dinosaur that existed in Portuguese territory during the Upper Jurassic. The first specimen, its fossil remains, were discovered on the cliffs of the Portuguese town of Lourinhã.

The coin has two versions, like almost all collector coins issued in Portugal, one, let's say, in a "classic" style and the other colored that glows in the dark. The novelty compared to other similar series is that it has fluorescent inks on both sides, so the coin has elements that light up in the dark on one side and the other.

The large images correspond to the Proof quality silver coin, which is the one with the colored parts that glow in the dark.

On the reverse, the gigantic sauropod appears up close, integrated into its natural environment, as if it were still present. After all, in a way, it still is. The scientific name of the species "Dinheirossaurus lourinhanensis" appears on the lower left edge, the artist's name "Joana Bruno" and the legend "Casa da Moeda" appear on the upper right edge.

On the obverse of this coin, we see the articulated vertebrae of Dinheirosaurus lourinhanensis, a trail of footprints and the silhouette of a dinosaur walking away, referring to an idea from the past; in the lower right quadrant is the face value "€ 5", the coat of arms of Portugal and below the country name and year of issue "Portugal 2021".

Above these lines we see the version in cupro-nickel and BU quality that will go on sale in Portugal at its face value, 5 euros. The silver coin will be priced at 65 euros.
