For next week, specifically on Tuesday, October 5, the Bank of Latvia announces the release of the commemorative 2-euro coins for the years 2020 and 2021: «Latgalian Ceramics» and «Centenary of the 'de jure' recognition of the Republic of Latvia '. Both coins had already been issued in their collector versions, now they will circulate when they begin to be distributed in rolls of 25 coins, as the Bank itself has communicated.

2 euro commemorative 2020 coin - Latgalian Ceramics

The issue volume for this coin is 412,000 pieces. 400,000 will be issued in rolls of 25 coins destined for circulation on Tuesday, October 5. 5,000 in BU quality presented in a coincard, like the one you see in the image above, were put on sale at a price of € 7.90 last year. The remaining 7,000 were put up for sale in the 2020 Euroset along with the rest of the circulating coins of that year, at a price of € 25.

The coin, the work of the artist Gundega Rancāne and the engraver Jānis Strupulis, is dedicated to the pottery of Latgalia or Latgaliana. This traditional pottery existed for long periods of time in two districts, Latgalia and Curland (Latgale and Kurzeme in Latvian, respectively), but only in Latgalia has it survived over the years and has been passed down from generation to generation. Latgalian pottery is also part of the Latvian Cultural Canon.

The motif represents a characteristic piece of Latgalian pottery, the clay candlestick. It bears the inscription «LATGALES KERAMIKA» (Latgalian ceramics), the name of the country, «LATVIJA», and the year of issue, «2020».

The edge of the coin, like all 2 euro circulation coins of the Republic of Latvia, bears the inscription "DIEVS * SVĒTĪ * LATVIJU *" (God bless Latvia). The new commemorative 2 euro coin has been minted by UAB Lietuvos monetų kalykla (Lithuania).
