We have already known about Italy's numismatic program for 2021 since the beginning of the year. The Italian Mint, Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato, published its entire program both in a catalog and in a video, which it already showed you here on January 22. Surprisingly, it has announced the issuance of a new currency that in principle did not appear in its plans, and that I will present to you today.

This unpublished coin, to date, will be issued on October 12 under the name of "Centennial of the Unknown Soldier." It is a coin with a face of 5 euros minted in silver of 925 purity, the work of Silvia Petrassi, which will have a sale price in Italy of € 50 for each of the 5,000 pieces that make up the issue.

The obverse of the coin shows an Italian soldier at the front reading a letter in a moment of rest. In the exergue, the inscription "ITALIAN REPUBLIC" delimited, in the lower part, by the Italian tricolor flag; on the left is the name of the artist «PETRASSI» (Silvia Petrassi).

The reverse shows the representation of one of the two braziers placed on both sides of the Chapel of the Unknown Soldier that houses, inside the Altare della Patria, the remains of an Italian soldier who fell during the First World War, with whom he is honored the memory of those who gave their lives in the name of Italy and their freedom. On the right, in the upper semicircle, the inscription "MILITE IGNOTO" and the dates "1921 - 2021"; bottom right the letter "R", identifying the Mint of Rome; and finally the face value "5 EURO".
