The German federal government announces the issuance of a new series of coins that will start during the fourth quarter of 2022 under the name "The Wonderful World of Insects." They are 5 euro facial coins and the first will be issued under the name "Insect Kingdom."
The collection will consist of a total of nine coins with partially colored motifs, extending between the years 2022 to 2024. Against the background of current events (extinction of insects), the series focuses on a special group of animals that constitute a part important part of the planet's natural heritage.
The first 5 euro coin "Kingdom of insects" is made of a copper-nickel alloy. It weighs 9g, has a diameter of 27.25mm and will be struck in two grades: BU and Proof. The former will be marketed at their face value (5 euros). Those of higher quality will be at a higher price, yet to be determined.
The coin was designed by the artists Jordi Truxa on its obverse and Andre Witting on the reverse.
The obverse shows a diverse habitat made up of water, land and air, as well as various insects that give life to this space. The delicate coloring, combined with the filigree representation of the plant and animal world, puts the habitat in the foreground instead of the insects. The inscription "Insektenreich" (Kingdom of Insects) appears at the bottom of the image forming the basis of the representation.
The reverse, where the face value appears, 5 euro, will be common to all the coins in the series and shows a stylized eagle representing the Coat of Arms of Germany. The inscription "BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND" (Federal Republic of Germany), the face value number and the currency, the year 2022, the twelve European stars, as well as the mark "F", corresponding to the Baden-Württemberg Mint in Stuttgart, complete the composition.
The edge of the coin is smooth and engraved with the inscription "WUNDERWELT INSEKTEN" (THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF INSECTS).
