The Royal Australian Mint today announced the release of a new colored, circulating commemorative $ 2 coin with which it wants to honor indigenous men and women who have served in the Australian military.

The coin has been presented in the city of Canberra, by Aboriginal artist, Kalkadoon Chern'ee Sutton, author of the design of the coin and the executive director of the Royal Australian Mint, Leigh Gordon.

Speaking about the issue, Leigh Gordon noted the importance of recognizing Indigenous Australians who have served in the military with a coin.

"With this coin, the Royal Australian Mint wants to recognize and honor the long tradition of indigenous Australians of serving in the military."

“Having served in all conflicts and engagements in which Australian defense contingents have been involved, from the Federation, including but not limited to Gallipoli, Kokoda and Vietnam, the strength of the Indigenous Service has been a constant throughout the Australian history."

Inspired by an artwork by Chern'ee Sutton, the coin design is rich with indigenous and military symbols representing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders who have served in the Australian Defense Forces.

During the presentation, Ms. Sutton thanked the indigenous staff who have served and continue to serve to defend Australia.

"I am honored to have designed this work of art that recognizes my brothers and sisters who have fought valiantly in all the conflicts Australia has been involved in, it is a tribute to the sacrifices they made for all of us."

Featuring the imprint of a black hand in the center, surrounded by three rows of dots in the colors of the flag of the three armies of the Defense Forces, this colorful $ 2 coin will be in circulation for the next several weeks.

The obverse shows, like all 2 dollar coins, the portrait and name of Queen 'Elizabeth II', the name of the issuing country 'Australia' and the year of issue '2021'.
