The second 2 euro commemorative coin of Finland in 2021, dedicated to the "Centenary of self-government of the Åland region", is expected to be issued next autumn. We already know that the circulation will be 800,000 pieces and the design that will be presented I show you in the following image.

The motif of the coin is the landscape of the archipelago, made up of relief shapes. The lower half features a scale with nautical posters, the bow of a ship, and a hand holding a compass. The horizontal middle line of the coin shows a sea horizon. The top half of the coin features sky and clouds. In the upper semicircle there is the legend in Swedish 'ÅLANDS SJÄLVSTYRELSE 100 ÅR', in the bottom, in Finnish 'AHVENANMAAN ITSEHALLINTO 100 VUOTTA', the translation for both is (100 YEARS OF SELF-GOVERNMENT OF ÅLAND). There are two diamond-shaped highlights between the texts, one on the left and the other on the right of the coin. Above the diamonds, on the right side, there is the inscription "2021 FI" and on the left, the mint mark of the Finnish Mint.

The autonomous Finnish province of Åland is located on the Baltic Sea, at the southern end of the Gulf of Bothnia, between the territories of Finland and Sweden.

The Åland archipelago consists of around 6,500 islands, but only slightly more than 60 are inhabited. Åland has its own tax system, its own postage stamp, its own flag, and Swedish as the only official language.

Åland is governed in accordance with the Åland Home Rule Act and other international treaties. These laws guarantee the autonomy of these islands from Finland, which is the one who holds their sovereignty.

The Åland Islands dispute was one of the first issues to be submitted to arbitration by the League of Nations. The dispute occurred between Sweden and Finland after the latter's independence. The League of Nations ended the dispute after giving the sovereignty of the islands to Finland in June 1921, being accepted by the Swedish government. Similarly, international guarantees were given to allow the population to continue with their own culture, alleviating the threat of forced assimilation by Finnish culture.
