The Bank of Greece announces the issuance of a new 10 euro face silver collector coin belonging to the Greek Culture – Mathematicians series, in which the philosopher and mathematician Thales of Miletus is the protagonist.

Thales (c. 624-540 BC), born at Miletus in Ionia, was the first known Greek mathematician, the first Greek philosopher, and one of the seven sages of antiquity. Thales considered water the beginning of everything, in the spirit of the natural philosophy that he initiated and that tried to explain phenomena based on natural processes and not on mythological interpretations. He dealt with cosmology, astronomy, physics and geometry. Thales' theorem or proportionality theorem is well known. It is said that he was able to accurately calculate the height of the Egyptian pyramids and also predicted the solar eclipse of 585 BC.

According to tradition, one day he was so absorbed in his astronomical observations that he fell into a well. The importance of the personality of Thales is enormous, since with him both European philosophy and the scientific study of natural phenomena with the help of mathematics are inaugurated.

The obverse of the coin, among geometric patterns, shows the bust of Thales of Miletus in the foreground. Below is an arched inscription, of his name and years of his life: ΘΑΛΗΣ Ο ΜΙΛΗΣΙΟΣ 624 – 540 π.Χ. On the right, the year of issue, 2024. On the left, the mint mark. At the bottom, at shoulder height on the left, the author's mark.

The reverse features a geometric ornament along the edge. In the center, on a background of stylized rays, the shield of the Hellenic Republic, surrounded by the name of the country, the denomination and name of the currency: ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΉ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΊΑ 10 ΕΥΡΩ.

The piece, presented in this case, comes accompanied by its corresponding Certificate of Authenticity. The selling price of this coin in Greece is €80.
