On March 21, a new commemorative 2 euro coin was issued and put into circulation in Germany, on this occasion the coin celebrates the "175th Anniversary of the Constitution of the Paulskirche."
The Constitution of Paulskirchen, also known as
the Constitution of St. Paul's Church, passed by the National Assembly on March 27, 1849 was the first attempt at a national, democratic constitution in Germany. Its objective was to constitute a unitary German federal state to which all the states of the German Confederation belonged, with the exception of the Austrian Empire.
The design features several thematic levels. In the foreground is an image of St. Paul's Church, where representatives of the national constitutional assembly are arriving. These images are superimposed on a representation of the constitutional document and a feather, which symbolizes the fruit of the Frankfurt Parliament's work. Finally, the design is finished with three feminine allegories (Unity, Justice and Freedom) and the black, red and gold tricolor flag. The three-dimensional dynamism of this inscription evokes the timelessness of the basic democratic principles that were first written down in the
Frankfurt Constitution.
The inner ring of the coin also includes the inscription "PAULSKIRCHENVERFASSUNG 1849" ("Constitution of St. Paul's Church 1849") and, at the bottom, the year of issue "2024", the German issuing country code "D" , the respective mintmark ("A", "D", "F", "G" or "J") and the initials of the artist, Bodo Broschat, from Berlin.
The edge of the German 2 euro commemorative coin contains the following inscription: "EINIGKEIT UND RECHT UND FREIHEIT" (UNITY, JUSTICE AND FREEDOM) and a stylized federal eagle.
The issuance volume of this coin is 30 million pieces.
