A new coin from the Language of Flowers series will be issued on April 17 by the Austrian Mint, this time the Peony is the protagonist.

The flowers that emerge from the peony's spherical bud, which last only seven to ten days, are a marvel, so we should appreciate the flower's ephemeral beauty while we can.

In the language of flowers, the peony symbolizes good fortune and happiness and is associated with brilliance, prosperity, boldness and honor. The flower also has other symbolic associations, such as compassion, love, beauty, and female fertility. In England, the peony is sometimes referred to as the "royal rose" and the Chinese word for peony, shaoyao , means "most beautiful." Many European artists, including Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet and Édouard Manet, have painted peonies, and the opulent beauty of the peony has long been a popular subject in Chinese literature, painting and decoration. and Japanese.

A Chinese legend says that a capricious empress ordered all the flowers in her garden to bloom at the same time. Everyone accepted except the peony. Upset by the flower's rejection, the empress banished it to the coldest corners of the empire, but despite the inhospitable environment, the peony thrived. The empress, duly impressed, allowed the peony to return, declaring it "queen of all flowers."

The obverse of the coin, which represents happiness and joy, shows a smiling young woman whose hair is adorned with laurel and pearls. To the right of her head is a curved cornucopia from which chalices of peonies and coins sprout.

The reverse of the coin features three prints of real peonies in different stages of bloom, behind them a band of stylized peonies.
