Continuing with the annual “Great Sailing Ships” series, the Royal Candian Mint has issued the third coin in this emblematic collection dedicated to the “Topsail Schooner” vessel. This collection, made up of coins with a face value of $200 and minted in pure gold, aims to pay tribute to each of the legendary ships that gave international fame to Canadian shipyards, and that contributed to its rich maritime heritage.

Topsail Schooner – Gavia Schooner

The topsail schooner is a ship with two or more masts that carries a bow-to-stern rig on each of its masts, but with the addition of one or more square sails rigged on the foremast. This type of rig was very common in Canadian waters and was used by fishing boats, cargo ships and even warships, since the small square topsails ran less risk of being ruined by enemy fire, this type of vessel was therefore quite popular. in the Anglo-American War of 1812.

The design on the reverse of the piece, by Canadian artist Bonnie Ross, is an exquisitely engraved and detailed portrait of Canada's past, presenting a three-quarter view of a two-masted schooner with a heeled topsail, and with all the sails spread, ready to catch the wind. The composition also includes the inscriptions of: name of the issuing country "CANADA", face value "200 DOLLARS" and year of issue "2024".

On the other hand, the obverse of the coin shows the well-known effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, the work of Susanna Blunt, and a special mark that includes four pearls to symbolize the four effigies that have adorned Canadian coins and the double date of its reign.
