The most collected coin in Europe and, of course, in Spain as well, is the commemorative 2-euro coin, which since the first was issued by Greece in 2004 has now numbered around 400 different ones.

Every time a new coin from this very interesting collection is announced, great anticipation is generated to discover the design. In Spain we have known for a long time that the coin corresponding to 2023 would be dedicated to the Old City of Cáceres, but the design is not. Today I show you a first sketch that reveals how the coin will be.

In 2010, the FNMT-RCM began issuing a series of 2-euro commemorative coins dedicated to Spanish sites inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. In 2023 it will be the turn of the fourteenth coin of the series, which is dedicated to the Old City of Cáceres.

Declared a World Heritage Site in 1986, Cáceres has an exceptionally well-preserved historic center of great unity that illustrates the passage of various cultures. Its origins can be traced back to Roman, Visigothic, Islamic, Gothic and Renaissance times, including an old Jewish quarter in what is now the Barrio de San Antonio. This set is included within a walled enclosure of approximately 1200 m. long of Almohad origin, often hidden behind buildings from a later period.

The 2023 coin will not focus on a specific image or monument, in it you will be able to see a panoramic image of the city in which parts of the wall that surrounded it can be seen.

As for the date or volume of issuance, I have not yet been able to know anything concrete, although the experience of previous years suggests that the coin can be issued in the month of March. I do know that the volume of issue will be greater than a million pieces, which will make it an easy currency to obtain and find on the exchange.

There are 49 sites that Spain has declared as World Heritage. The coins in this extensive series are issued in the order in which they were proclaimed. As long as one continues to be issued per year, this would be the year that would correspond, or has corresponded, to each place.

This would be the issue of the 2 euro commemorative coins dedicated to the World Heritage Sites in Spain, with the 49 that it currently has. It is almost certain that over the years the list will expand, each new place that is incorporated into the UNESCO list will also become part of this collection of coins, yes, last.

You may be wondering if several places have been declared a World Heritage Site in the same year, what is the criteria to put one in front of the other. In this case, the number with which it has been registered by UNESCO governs, as is logical, the lowest first.
