Within a week one of the most exclusive numismatic articles issued in recent times by the FNMT will be issued. These are 500 units of the complete collection of silver coins from the V Centenary of the First World Tour series, which also includes a 2-euro commemorative coin in Proof quality dedicated to the same theme.

In the year 2019, the Royal National Mint and Stamp Factory began this series made up of four coins, one per year, which has been narrating the stages of the expedition of Magellan and Elcano (1519-1522) until culminating with the First Circumnavigation of the World 500 years ago.

The coins that make up the collection have been a tribute to one of the greatest achievements in human history, the first circumnavigation of the Earth, which revealed the relationship between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and showed that the world was spherical.

Coins that make up the collection

2019 – Departure

In 1519, two hundred and thirty-nine men and five ships set sail from Spain in search of a route west to the Spice Islands (now called the Moluccas in Indonesia).

On the reverse of the coin, a scene with five ships crossing the sea is reproduced in color.

On the obverse, two images of Juan Sebastián Elcano and Ferdinand Magellan are reproduced, taken from the portraits of both that are kept in the Naval Museum of Madrid. Above these images, a compass rose. On the right, inside an oval, detail of the head of the sculptural work entitled Carlos V, made by Leone and Pompeo Leoni, which is kept in the Museo Nacional del Prado, in Madrid.

2020 – Strait of Magellan

The 202 coin was dedicated to the passage of the Strait of Magellan, or Dark Sea, which was what the Atlantic Ocean was called at that time, so called because, even knowing the direction of the winds, they did not know where it could take them. There was no known inhabited territory beyond and they ran the risk of getting lost in the mists and darkness. In addition, it was thought that these waters were inhabited by monsters and mermaids that took sailors with them to the bottom of the sea.

Fortunately, on November 1, 1520, All Saints' Day, they reached what would be called the Strait of Magellan, a passage to cross from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. It took 28 days to make this crossing.

The coin aims to represent that feeling of fear when crossing an uncharted sea, adding sea monsters that came from the imagination of men. The little angel on top of the boat represents the force of the winds.

The obverse of this coin is the same as the 2019 one, it just changes the year.

2021 – Moluccas Islands

The third coin in this series is dedicated to the arrival of Juan Sebastián Elcano to the Spice Islands (currently the Moluccas Islands).

On November 7, 1521, they reached the Moluccas, docking at the island of Tidore the next day. There they asked their king for permission to trade.

On December 18, 1521, with both ships loaded with cloves and cinnamon, they prepared to leave for Spain. However, that same day a water leak was discovered in Trinidad, necessitating a lengthy repair. For this reason, on the 21st, the Nao Victoria left alone to the west.

On the reverse, a representation of The Arrival in the Moluccas is reproduced in colour.

The obverse of this coin is the same as 2019 and 2020, it just changes the year.

2022 – Arrival

The fourth and last coin of the V Centenary of the First Voyage Around the World commemorates the arrival in Spain of the Nao Victoria in September 1522 under the command of the navigator Juan Sebastián Elcano, with only 18 crew members, after completing the first circumnavigation of the world.

On the reverse, an image is reproduced that recalls the arrival in Spain of the Nao Victoria in September 1522, commanded by Juan Sebastián de Elcano and the last 17 survivors of the expedition, who completed the first circumnavigation of the world.

On the obverse, the image of Juan Sebastián de Elcano is reproduced, taken from the portrait that is kept in the Naval Museum of Madrid. Above this image, a compass rose. On the right, detail of the coat of arms of Juan Sebastián de Elcano. In the upper part of the coin, the legend SPAIN 2022.
