Climate change is the most serious environmental threat of our time. It manifests itself in the form of regional and global changes in temperature, precipitation and wind conditions, in addition to the increase in the surface of the ocean. To slow this change, research and an understanding of what is happening on the Earth's surface, the atmosphere and the entire global ecosystem is needed.

The University of Helsinki is at the forefront of climate research. Under the leadership of academic Markku Kulmala, the Center of Excellence in Atmospheric Sciences has been able to discover new factors that affect climate.

With a commemorative 2-euro coin, issued on September 30, Finland wants to recognize the climate research that is being carried out in the world and especially in Finland.

The beard lichen, nature's own measure of air quality, is represented on the obverse of this 2-euro commemorative coin. The relief is made up of a network of ramifications in the form of a root. The insightful motif can also be interpreted as a representation of the lungs, reminding us of the importance of air quality and its study. This coin has been designed by the artist duo Tuominen Patel (Terhi Tuominen and Jitan V. Patel).

On the inside of the coin is the legend “CLIMATE RESEARCH” in Finnish on the left side, and in Swedish on the right side. At the bottom is the inscription "2022 FI", year of issue and the abbreviation of the issuing country. At the top is the mark of the Finnish Mint.

The issue volume of this coin is 400,000, of which 5,000 are in Proof quality, the rest are issued in rolls of 25 coins intended for circulation.
