As announced, next Tuesday, September 1, the first commemorative 2-euro coin that Portugal has planned for this 2020 will be issued, dedicated to celebrating the "730th Anniversary of the University of Coimbra." This coin, the one with the lowest circulation to date of all those issued by Portugal, of this type, 360,000 pieces, comes to replace the initially planned one, "Portuguese Participation in the Olympic Games", which has been postponed to 2021.
Scientiae Thesaurus Mirabilis is the name of the document signed by King Dionysius I of Portugal, in 1290, and recognized by Pope Nicholas IV that same year, thus creating the General Studies and giving rise to the University of Coimbra, responsible, throughout of time, of the formation of national elites and the evolution and consolidation of culture.
With an undeniable historical heritage, the University of Coimbra celebrates its 730 years in 2020. It has a unique tangible and intangible heritage, fundamental in the history of European and world scientific culture, and since 2013 a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
To mark this important historical milestone, the Casa da Moeda in Portugal has minted a coin by the sculptor José João de Brito.
The national side of the coin represents the tower of the University of Coimbra and a visual composition of triangles that represent the roofs of the University of Coimbra, the highest being that of the Joanina chapel. Between the triangles the text "UNIVERSIDADE DE COIMBRA 730 ANOS" appears, below it appears the name of the issuing country and the year of issue "PORTUGAL 2020".
Of the 360,000 of which the issue consists, 350,000 will be distributed in rolls of 25 coins. 5,000 in BU quality and another 5,000 in Proof quality will be put on sale in the presentations that you can see below.
