"Faster than sound" is the name of the fourth and final coin in the "Reaching for the Sky" series being issued by the Austrian Mint. The coin is dedicated to the undisputed star of commercial air travel, the Concorde supersonic aircraft. The most iconic and glamorous aircraft ever to have soared into the skies, the Concorde was not only a triumph of engineering, but with its delta wings and slightly bent nose it was also a design classic. In service from 1976 to 2003, the Concorde captivated us like no other civil aircraft has ever done before.

With a top speed of more than twice the speed of sound (2,180 km / h) and a flight time from Paris to New York of three and a half hours, the Concorde was a collaboration between the British and French aviation industries. Although it was a source of national pride for both countries, with its high fuel consumption and excessive noise levels, including the sonic boom when breaking the sound barrier, the Concorde caused controversy from the start. The excessive cost of its development program and the consequent prohibitive cost of a seat on the narrow plane, up to 30 times that of the cheapest transatlantic options, made the Concorde reserved for the wealthy, who were served champagne and caviar. on the flight to disguise the relative discomfort of the plane.

Its large consumption did not make it comply with the concepts of sustainability and efficiency that dominate today, so its withdrawal was decided. With the disappearance of the Concorde in 2003, supersonic civil aviation came to an end as the spirit of the time had evolved, from the old dream of flying to the dream of an environmentally friendly flight. However, the sound barrier was broken many during this journey.

The reverse of the coin shows the Concorde taking off over Paris, with the River Seine and the Eiffel Tower below. On the obverse of the coin is Chuck Yeager piloting his Bell X-1 "Glamorous Glennis", the first aircraft to exceed the speed of sound in horizontal flight on October 14, 1947.
