We could say that what Steve Jobs and Bill Gates mean for the world of information technology was Christophe Plantin for the art of printing. He was the chamber printer of Felipe II and is considered the first of the great industrial printers. Belgium has just issued a coin to commemorate the 500th anniversary of her birth.
In 1550, the French bookbinder Christophe Plantin and his family moved to Antwerp, then the commercial metropolis of Europe. Determined to develop his career as a printer, he managed to become the largest publisher in the world in just 20 years.
At its peak, his shop had 22 printing presses and employed 80 people who produced high-quality printed material - from religious works such as Bibles and breviaries to high-quality scientific publications on mathematics, cartography and medicine. Even the printing of music scores, playing cards and dictionaries were part of its rich offering.
Christophe Plantin's discipline in ironworking and know-how were his hallmarks, but his keen business sense also attracted foreign clients, allowing him to open subsidiaries in Leiden and Paris.
When Plantin died in 1589, one of his stepsons (Jean I Moretus) took over the management of his company. After this, nine generations of Moretus will live and work there. In 1876, the last owner, the nobleman Edouard Moretus, ceased his activity and the publishing house with all its contents passed into the hands of the city of Antwerp and the Belgian state. The following year, the house and the printing press were opened to the public. The Plantin-Moretus Museum was a reality!
