On June 2nd, Portugal issued the commemorative coin "Multiculturalism," a series that celebrates the coexistence of cultures and the richness of a diverse society. The coin is part of the fifth edition of the Design the Coin competition, an initiative promoted by the Portuguese Mint (INCM) in collaboration with the Faro City Council, aimed at introducing numismatics to students and fostering their creativity.
The coin originated from an educational project that, in this edition, focused on multiculturalism, a concept that highlights the importance of coexistence, inclusion, and respect among people of different cultural backgrounds. The competition garnered a total of 139 proposals created by elementary school students, reflecting diverse perspectives on cultural diversity and social integration.
The winning design was created by Melissa Garcia, a student at the Pinheiro e Rosa School Group in Faro. Her design was selected for its ability to clearly and visually convey the values associated with the theme of this year's competition.

Obverse
The obverse features the year of issue, 2026, at the top. The coat of arms of Portugal is depicted in the center, while the face value, "€5", appears to its right. The name of the issuing country, "Portugal", is inscribed along the bottom edge.
Reverse
The reverse features a symbolic composition of eight arms representing different nationalities converging towards the center of the coin, supporting the Portuguese coat of arms. The arms are identified with the inscriptions "Spain," "Italy," "Korea," "France," "Russia," "Angola," "Mexico," and "Argentina," symbolizing cultural diversity and coexistence among different communities. The mint mark "CASA DA MOEDA" appears on the lower left edge, while Melissa Garcia's signature is on the lower right.
