Proof Quality
Proof quality minting refers to the first samples of a new batch of coins, which historically was done to control the quality of the die. Today, these types of coins are made frequently and in greater numbers, especially for collectors, and are highly valued.
In preparing a Proof quality coin, the dies are polished. These coins are distinguished from normal circulation coins by the sharpness of the design, as well as by the high polish and smoothness of the "fields" (white or smooth areas that are not part of the design of the coin itself).
The feeding of the presses is done manually to prevent the blanks from deteriorating. After each minting, the dies are cleaned and replaced every thousand stamps at most. The different handling processes are carried out with great care and, to avoid leaving stains or fingerprints, the operators use cotton gloves.
The dies for these Proof coinages undergo a polishing process, so that the polished areas will have a "mirror" finish or effect and the rest of the coinage areas will have a "matte" appearance.
A characteristic of this class of coins is that they are struck two or more times, resulting in greater sharpness and quality.
