On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the birth of the exceptional Hungarian racehorse Kincsem, born on March 17, 1874, the National Bank of Hungary, Magyar Nemzeti Bank (MNB), issued a commemorative silver coin with a face value of 15,000 florins and a cupro-nickel coin with a face value of 3,000 florins. Both coins share the same design, the only difference is the face value.

Kincsem

Kincsem, the unbeatable "wonder mare", an English thoroughbred bred in Hungary at Ernő Blaskovich's stud farm, was the pride of Hungarian horse racing and breeding. The race mare, world famous for her sporting successes, competed 54 times in many European countries outside Hungary and won 54 victories. In addition to her calm character, the secret of the mare's consecutive victories lay in her extraordinary physical abilities and in a training plan adapted to her individual characteristics, developed by trainer Róbert Hesp.

The obverse shows a portrait of Kincsem at the age of four, with a laurel wreath around his neck, inspired by a painting by the equestrian painter Emil Adam. The laurel wreath ribbon bouquet has the inscription "54 FUTAMON 54 GYŐZELEM" (54 wins in 54 races) in a circular legend, with the inscription "54" located in the center, referring to the racing performance of the unbeatable wonder mare. The obverse also shows the inscription of the issuing country “MAGYARORSZÁG” (Hungary), the face value, the year of minting “2024”, the mint mark “BP” and the signature of the coin's designer Gábor Kereszthury.

While on the reverse, a full-figure depiction of Kincsem at the age of four is shown, based on an 1878 painting by equestrian painter Emil Adam, capturing the racehorse's unsurpassed physical gifts. Next to Kincsem is his teacher, Ernő Blaskovich. We also observe a representation of the racehorse's favorite cat, with which he had a special relationship, being his faithful companion during races and trips, and the inscriptions of the horse's name "KINCSEM" and the coin motif "150" are included. ÉVE SZÜLETETT TO MAGYAR CSODAKANCA» (150 YEARS SINCE THE BIRTH OF THE HUNGARIAN WONDER HORSE).
