From barely knowing anything about this coin, in a few days we have gone on to have almost complete information about this new commemorative 2 euro coin that Croatia will issue very soon, in principle, if there are no delays, the date that must be marked on the calendar as issue date is next July 2.
This commemorative coin begins a series called "Croatian Cities" with the issuance of the one dedicated to the "City of Varaždin". In the same figure, Varaždin Castle, a cultural heritage with a special historical significance for Varaždin and the Republic of Croatia itself, appears as a representative element of the city.
The design features the Varaždin Castle (12th – 16th centuries). Varaždin is first mentioned in 1181. Having suffered heavy casualties in the Tatar invasion of 1242, it was built as a royal fortress, which would become known as Varaždin Castle. Its appearance has changed over the centuries: it has successively been a powerful medieval fortress surrounded by water moats, the main fortress and armory of the Slavonian military frontier, the military headquarters of Varaždin and a beautiful Renaissance castle. Today, the castle is the most important and splendid historical building in the city of Varaždin, a sublime monument of Croatian architectural heritage.
The coin also includes the name of the issuing country "HRVATSKA" (Croatia), the year of issue "2024" and the legend "STARI GRAD VARAŽDIN" (Varaždin Castle), all inscribed in a circle at the top and bottom of the design .
The announced emission volume is 200,000 units, of which 5,000 will be in Proof quality. The issue date, next July 2.
By the way, there is expected to be a second commemorative 2 euro coin from Croatia this year, for which we do not yet know what it will be dedicated to.
