Among the numismatic issues scheduled by the Vatican for next July 3, I present a new coincard and a 20 euro copper coin from the Art and Faith series.

The Vatican City State Mint presents Coincard No. 3, which includes a regular circulation coin of 1 euro with a mint date of 2024. This laminated card features an image of Pope Francis.

20 euro copper coin – Art and Faith – San Pedro and the Rooster

The Vatican City State Mint continues its “Art and Faith” series with the 20 euro face and proof quality copper coin depicting Saint Peter and the Rooster.

On the reverse of the coin, the artist Daniela Fusco shows in the foreground the rooster of Saint Peter, a bronze statue preserved in the Treasure Museum of Saint Peter's Basilica, and in the background an image of the apostle Peter. 

 

The rooster, always associated with the apostle Peter, recalls the prophetic words of Jesus: “Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times” (Lk 22:54-62). The episode narrated in the four Gospels refers to the arrest of Jesus, when Peter, overcome by fear, denies him, pretending not to know him, and then repents and weeps bitterly for it. Jesus knows that this humble fisherman will be the rock on which his Church will be built (Mt 16:18). In light of this, the artist represents Peter with the keys in his hand, symbols of spiritual authority and of the role of guardian of the gates of Paradise: “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven” (Mt 16:19).
