At the end of last April, the Bank of Greece issued a 10-euro collector's coin in silver with a face. This piece is dedicated to Euclid, the great Greek mathematician and father of geometry who devoted most of his work to making its foundations known.

Euclid lived in Alexandria during the reign of Ptolemy. His most important work was the Elements, a set of 13 books where the bases and fundamental principles of geometry were exposed and, based on five unprovable postulates or axioms, he managed to summarize the geometric wisdom of the time in an understandable and coherent system, called Euclidean geometry in his honor. His influence was so immense that it was not until the 19th century that a non-Euclidean geometry was developed. He also wrote Optics, Catoptrics, and Conics, among others.

On the obverse of the coin, among geometric background patterns, we see as the main image the half-sided bust of Euclid, precursor of Euclidean geometry. In the form of a semicircle, surrounding the center of the coin, appear the inscriptions "ΕΥΚΛΕΙΔΗΣ" (Euclid) and the date of his birth and death. The year of issue “2023” is shown on the left side of the character, and the mint mark at the top.

On the reverse, on a background composed of small geometric shapes, the coat of arms of Greece appears surrounded by the inscriptions "ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΉ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΊΑ" (Hellenic Republic) and the face value 10 EYPΩ (10 Euro).
