The Royal Australian Mint has issued a new 1 oz pure silver investment coin, belonging to the Australian Antarctic Territory Series, dedicated to the majestic emperor penguin. Various species of penguins live throughout Antarctica, but none as large and magnificent as this one.

The emperor penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri) is the tallest and heaviest of all extant penguin species. Their diet consists mainly of fish. These animals are endemic to Antarctica, including the Australian Antarctic Territory. The species was once considered a species of Least Concern, but is currently classified as Near Threatened, as its population has declined due to decreased food availability due to climate change and commercial fishing.

The reverse of the piece shows a father and his calf standing on the edge of the Antarctic ice. Behind them, a line of emperor penguins waddles toward the ocean to plunge into it, against the backdrop of ice floes. We also see inscribed on the right and in a semicircular way the name of the species "EMPEROR PENGUIN" and the content and purity of the metal.

While on the obverse of the coin appears the well-known effigy of the late monarch Elizabeth II, including her reign dates (1952 - 2022), the issue date "2023" and the face value of "1 DOLLAR".
