The Bank of Greece issued the second coin in the “Filohelenos” series dedicated to Karl von Normann-Ehrenfels on May 2.

This series of coins is a recognition that Philhellenes around the world contributed to the Greek cause, be it by joining the Greek forces and fighting with them on the battlefield or by encouraging public opinion and political awareness, as well as funding. of the Greek War of Independence. Students, intellectuals, doctors or experienced soldiers from Great Britain, France, Germany, Switzerland and the Scandinavian countries, but also from the United States of America, were moved by the suffering of the Greek people, motivated by their love for Greece and the ancients. Greek ideals.


Karl Friedrich Lebrecht von Normann-Ehrenfels was born in 1784 into a noble family in Stuttgart (Wurttemberg). He followed a military career and fought on Bonaparte's side in the Napoleonic wars, since Wurttemberg was an ally of France, and he participated in the Russian campaign. He retired after the Battle of Leipzig (1813). Deeply moved by the Greeks' fight for freedom, he decided to fight for the Greek cause. In February 1822, accompanied by 50 other Philhellenes, Normann reached Navarino, which he successfully defended. He then joined Alexandros Mavrokordatos' campaign in Epirus, commanding a battalion made up of French, Italian, German, and Polish Philhellenes. After an initial victory at Kompoti, near Arta, the revolutionaries suffered a crushing defeat at the Battle of Peta, on July 16, 1822, with numerous casualties among the Philhellenes. Badly wounded, Normann died at Missolonghi on November 15, 1822.
