On November 1, a 20-krona coin will be issued to commemorate the change of throne in Denmark. This new issue marks the transition of the throne from Queen Margrethe II to her son, King Frederick X, who assumed the throne on January 14, 2024.

The Danish monarchy is one of the oldest in the world, with a tradition dating back more than a thousand years. The change of throne represents a momentous moment for the country, as it is not only about the succession of a monarch, but also the continuity of an institution that has been a symbol of stability and unity for Denmark. The commemorative coin is a way of immortalising this event, providing a tangible and lasting reminder of this important chapter in Danish history.

The obverse of the coin shows a portrait of Frederick X facing right. The words FREDERIK X – DANMARKS KONGE – 2024 (FREDERICK X – KING OF DENMARK – 2024) appear along the outer rim. The king’s motto FORBUNDNE – FORPLIGTET – FOR KONGERIGET DANMARK (UNITED – COMMITTED – FOR THE KINGDOM OF DENMARK) appears on the inner ring. The mint mark (a heart) appears at the bottom of the coin, next to the initials of the General Treasurer and Chief Designer of Danmarks Nationalbank.

The reverse of the coin shows a portrait of Queen Margrethe facing right. Along the outer edge are the inscriptions MARGRETHE II – DANMARKS DRONNING (MARGREEN II – QUEEN OF DENMARK). On the inner side are the dates of the reign: 14 JANUARY 1972 – 14 JANUARY 2024. The lower part of the reverse of the coin shows the face value, 20 KRONER (20 CROWNS).

The issuance of this commemorative coin goes beyond its numismatic value; it is a symbol of the respect that the Danes have for their history and traditions. At the same time, it represents an acknowledgement of the changes and challenges that the monarchy faces in the 21st century. In a world where many royal houses face questions about their relevance and role, the commemorative coin reaffirms the importance of the Danish monarchy as a unifying element and representative of the national spirit.
