Under the name Salt Trade , the second coin in the series The White Gold of Hallstatt, minted by the Austrian Mint, is being issued. It does so with a piece that focuses on the second step of the lucrative business that turned the picturesque lakeside town into a vibrant commercial centre and cultural capital during the Bronze Age.

The discovery of a prehistoric burial ground in Hallstatt in the 19th century showed that the Hallstatters were not only resourceful and enterprising, but also open to new things, including goods. Food, tools and all kinds of exotic treasures found their way to the Salzkammergut region, including honey-coloured amber from the Baltic, greenish glass vessels from northern Italy or western Slovenia and ivory sword hilts.

These exotic treasures reached Hallstatt through the networks developed to export the town's "white gold" in all directions, even beyond the Alpine region. Hallstatt is believed to have supplied salt to half of Central Europe, as well as to distant places in the North Sea, the Baltic Sea and the Mediterranean.

Salt transport was often a precarious business, as in addition to the steep mountainous terrain of the Salzkammergut region around Hallstatt, there were also human obstacles such as bandits and even pirates. However, the salt trade also brought with it innovations, such as a system of artificial roads connecting Hallstatt with neighbouring areas to the north and south.

The obverse of the coin depicts a mythical creature from the Mediterranean region. The depiction is from a vessel discovered in the prehistoric cemetery of Hallstatt. The background features a design from the Hallstatt culture.

The reverse of the coin features a collage showing a commercial scene in which goods are transported in sacks on a horse-drawn cart and in decorated vessels. The figures are inspired by artistic representations found on Iron Age bronze vessels, known as situlae .
