In a few days, on October 22, Guatemala will issue a new currency to celebrate the centenary of the adoption of a monetary unit one hundred years ago. In November 1924, the country switched from the gold standard to the quetzal.

What is a gold standard currency?

A currency based on the gold standard is a system in which the value of a country's currency is directly tied to gold. In this system, the amount of money in circulation is backed by gold reserves, and the currency can be freely converted into a fixed amount of gold. This is called the gold standard.

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, many countries used the gold standard. If a country set the value of its currency at 1 coin = 1 ounce of gold, this meant that you could exchange one unit of that currency for one ounce of gold at any time. The amount of gold a country possessed limited the amount of money that could circulate.

The gold standard was abandoned by most countries during the 20th century, especially after the Great Depression and World War II, being replaced by monetary systems based on trust and economic stability, where currencies are no longer directly backed by a physical resource such as gold.

The Quetzal as the currency of Guatemala

The quetzal is the official currency of Guatemala, introduced in 1924 during the government of José María Orellana to modernize the economy and replace the Guatemalan peso. Its name comes from the national bird, a symbol of freedom and Mayan culture. It was originally backed by the gold standard, but this system was abandoned after the Great Depression.

Over the years, the quetzal has evolved in design, including historical figures and cultural symbols of Guatemala. Today, there are banknotes of up to 200 quetzales (23.70 euros) and coins of various values in circulation, making it an emblem of national identity.
