The Austrian Mint is issuing a coin on October 16 to both celebrate the 2025 Alpine World Ski Championships in Saalbach, Austria, and to demonstrate the country's love of winter sports. Under the name World Champion, the coin captures the joy that comes when great achievements make an entire country proud.
Whether skiing, snowboarding, sledding or snowshoeing through a snowy landscape, the connection with the winter wonderland is deeply rooted in Austrians. There are few natural experiences better than sliding through untouched snow. Shifting your weight from side to side while speeding down a slope provides a feeling of enormous physical freedom . At times like these, we feel like world champions as we enjoy the moment, overcome our personal challenges and take in the spectacular snowy landscape.
The reverse of the coin depicts the head of a skier wearing a helmet and the number one, symbolising first place. The word Weltmeister (World Champion) is reflected in the skier's goggles - the goal that every competitive athlete has in mind. The skier's face is only visible through the outline of the coin, and the design is completed by snow crystals in the background.
The obverse of the coin features the coats of arms of the nine federal states of Austria, as on all Austrian 5 euro coins.
Available in silver and copper, and designed without a year of issue, this timeless coin is dedicated to all the world champions who have made Austria proud and will continue to do so.
This 5 euro coin, like all those issued by Austria with this value, can be purchased in two versions, the copper one at face value and the silver one, presented in the wallet you see above, at a price of €21 (Prices in Austria).
