On October 7, the second coin in the series "Masterpieces of German Literature" was issued, with a piece dedicated to "The Broken Jug", a play written by Heinrich von Kleist. This collection is made up of pure gold coins with a face value of 100 euros.

The Broken Jug (original German title: Der zerbrochene Krug) is a famous play written by German author Heinrich von Kleist in 1806. It is a one-act comedy that combines elements of satire and drama, and is set in a small Dutch village. Throughout the play, Kleist addresses themes such as corruption, justice, and morality, all wrapped up in a witty and comical plot.

The play revolves around a trial that takes place in a small town court. The case concerns a jug that has been broken, and the owner, Marta Rull, accuses young Ruprecht of having broken it. However, as the trial progresses, Judge Adam, who is in charge of solving the case, finds himself involved in the plot in an unexpected way.

The story takes on a comical tone because Judge Adam is actually guilty of breaking the jug, during a nighttime visit to Marta's house with the intention of courting her daughter, Eva. Adam tries in every possible way to conceal his responsibility, manipulating the trial and diverting the accusations towards Ruprecht.

As witnesses are questioned and facts are revealed, Adam's incompetence and corruption become increasingly apparent. In the end, Adam's deception is exposed, leading to a satirical critique of justice and power.

The coin's motif, designed by Berlin artist Bodo Broschat, depicts a three-part scene. In the centre is the court hearing with the main characters, while on the sides are depicted the beginning and end of the action: on the left is the jug, which falls and breaks as they flee, on the right is the happy union of Eva and Ruprecht.

The obverse features a stylised eagle, the inscription “BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND 2024”, the face value “100 EURO”, the twelve stars of Europe and, according to the Mint, its mintmarks “A” (Berlin), “D” (Munich), “F” (Stuttgart), “G” (Karlsruhe) and “J” (Hamburg). The edge of the coin is striated.
