The Bank of Ukraine has issued a new 10 hryvnia coin for one of the best-known recipes of Ukrainian cuisine, Borsch. The coin is available in silver or nickel alloy, with the latter version having a special presentation.
The world is full of culinary delights, but the original dish that best conveys the flavor and centuries-old culture of Ukraine is Ukrainian borsch. For Ukrainians, borsch is more than just a dish. Over time, Ukrainian borsch has gained recognition all over the world, becoming a symbol of Ukrainian cuisine and the embodiment of Ukrainian tradition. Borsch is revered everywhere, and the recipe is passed down from generation to generation. In 2022, UNESCO included Ukrainian borsch on the list of intangible cultural heritage in need of protection, which aims to spread knowledge of Ukrainian cultural and gastronomic traditions around the world.
On the obverse of the coin there is the small state emblem of Ukraine at the top, with semicircular inscriptions to the left and right of it: UKRAINE, year of minting of the coin, 2023; face value, 10 hryvnias; in the center appears a woman cooking borsch, a symbol of the continuity of village life, warmth, comfort, prosperity, family happiness, decorated with a tripilian motif representing the centuries-old history and tradition of cooking borsch.
The reverse of the coin presents a stylized composition that fills this traditional Ukrainian recipe with color and life: in the center, a plate of borsch, which looks like "a lake over which a storm is raging", on which the word Borsch appears . The representation wants to symbolize Ukrainian culture and traditions.
