On October 12, the National Bank of Poland (Narodowy Bank Polski – NBP) issued a new 10 zloty silver coin dedicated to celebrating the “250th anniversary of the National Education Commission”.

National Education Commission

The National Education Commission (“KEN”) was created at the initiative of King Stanislaus August Poniatowski by resolution of the Partition Sejm of October 14, 1773. The Commission was the first educational authority of the State, not only in Poland but also throughout Europe. The Commission's activity was financed with assets obtained as a result of the dissolution of the Jesuit order.

The newly created authority was given the task of preparing a uniform educational system. The reform would be based on a new system and order of science based on the knowledge, discoveries and achievements of the scientists of the time. The experts devised a three-tier educational system: at the primary level there were parochial schools, at the secondary level there were voivodeship schools, and at the tertiary level there were the universities of Krakow and Vilnius.

The Commission explicitly declared the need to educate farmers and girls from the bourgeois and peasant classes, and the teaching of Latin was reduced in favor of the Polish language. In addition, the first Polish grammar was developed, an important tool in the fight to give the language its proper status, and it was proposed to provide all schools with teaching materials while expanding the collections of school libraries.

The reverse of the coin shows a composition made up of books decorated with a laurel branch, and a quote from the first proclamation of the National Education Commission of October 24, 1773.

While on the front of the piece there is the seal of the National Education Commission. Inside the seal there is a round shield with five fields containing the emblem of the Polish and Lithuanian Crown, and on the central shield is the coat of arms of Ciołek, belonging to the family of King Stanislaus Augustus. Around the seal there is a constituency along the edge: “Collegium Praefectorum Publicae Institutioni” (College of Governors of Public Education), the constituency refers to the original legal name: “Commission for Supervising the Education of National Noble Youth” .
