For a few days now, the Britannia investment coins have been on sale in their 2023 version, one of the most popular pieces on the international market. As every year under the same design we will find gold and silver coins in different weights.

The great novelty this year is that there will be two different versions, the first, already issued, has the effigy of the deceased Isabel II, and already in 2023 those with the image of the new monarch, Carlos III, will be issued. Thus, both versions will be very special, one will be the last of a cycle and the other will be the first.

For more than 1,100 years, The Royal Mint has innovated to create coins that are beautiful, safe and trusted. In 2023, Britannia, the symbol of Great Britain, continues to lead the definition of security in the investment coin market. This latest evolution of the icon combines Philip Nathan's acclaimed interpretation with four innovative security elements to create the world's most secure bullion coin.

These additions decorate and protect the coin, as the microtext that borders the design reads: "Decus et Tutamen", which translates as "An adornment and a safeguard". At the bottom left of the design, under Britannia's dress, is a trident representing Britannia's naval history. When changed in perspective, this trident becomes a padlock, underscoring the secure nature of the coin. The animation of the surface behind Britannia reflects the movement of the waves and fine details, such as the Union Flag on the Britannia crest, have been highlighted.

This award-winning Britannia design was created by Philip Nathan and first minted in 1987. In one hand, Britannia holds an olive branch symbolizing peace. In the other, he holds a trident as a reminder of the nation's power and a nod to Britannia's naval connections. With her Corinthian helmet and Union Flag crest to her side, Britannia's strength is apparent to all who behold her.

The obverse of this first version shows a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark. The inscriptions on the coin, shown around the effigy, are its nominal value of 2 pounds, as well as an abbreviated Latin legend “DG REG FD” (Dei Gratia Regina Fidei Defensatrix) (Queen by the Grace of God and Defender of Faith).
