The last coin issue in Portugal, on November 17, is the second piece in the "Portugal and the Orient" series (after the issue of the "Art of Lacquer" coin, referring to Japan, in 2021). , this year, in reference to China, Porcelain is the protagonist.

Portugal and China have been directly related for half a millennium, since the Portuguese navigators arrived in Malacca. One of the most beautiful and enduring symbols of this dialogue is undoubtedly porcelain. This is reflected in all shapes and types of pottery. White, translucent, waterproof, resistant, soft and resonant to the touch, its appeal remains irresistible. Portuguese merchants were among the first to import porcelain from China, which soon became widely accepted.

Inspired by the typical floral motifs of Chinese and Portuguese porcelain, as well as by his personal experiences in Macao, the multifaceted artist André Carrilho challenged the Casa da Moeda technical team to create a unique and innovative piece. With a face value of 5 euros, all the finishes have a square hole in the center, referring to the well-known amulet coins in circulation in China. The silver and gold coins have colored notes.

The coin shows on its obverse graphic elements of Portuguese porcelain, with the national coat of arms and the armillary sphere in the upper center and the face value in the lower center. On the reverse, the entire coin features decorative elements alluding to Chinese porcelain, with the words “Arte da Porcelana” at the top and “Casa da Moeda” at the bottom left. The mint mark, the author's name and the legend «Portugal 2022» complete the composition. The center of the coin has a square-shaped perforation that alludes to ancient Chinese coins.

The coin can be purchased in three versions with the same design, one minted in cupronickel at face value, and two in precious metals, one in silver and the other in gold, at obviously higher prices. The silver coin and the gold coin are presented as you can see in the image.
