Although the invention of the telephone was attributed to Alexander Graham Bell for many years, it was finally shown that the invention was owed to the Italian engineer Antonio Meucci, who was the creator of the " teletrophone ", later referred to as "telephone."

This year marks the 150th anniversary of the invention of the telephone by Antonio Meucci and the Italian Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato has decided to issue a coin to honor the character and his invention, the Telephone.

The obverse of the coin shows the portrait of Antonio Meucci from an engraving by Giovanni Cantagalli published in 1889 in the magazine "L'Illustrazione Italiana" (Library of the Museo di Storia della Fotografia Fratelli Alinari, Florence); In the background, a stylized representation of the Telephone, the first version of the telephone invented by Meucci. In the exergue, the inscription "ITALIAN REPUBLIC" and the name of the designer "ANNALISA MASINI".

On the reverse, the composition is inspired by the typical telephone and depicts an old telephone in use between the 1960s and early 1990s with the logogram @, the symbol of the Internet, located in the center of its electromagnetic rotary dial. Above, the year of issue of the coin «2021»; in the exergue the inscriptions «150 ° DEL TELEPHONE» and «5 EURO» respectively; on the left the mint mark «R», which identifies the Mint of Rome.
