Last year the Royal Mint started a new series of coins under the name of "Myths and Legends", these are pieces of the so-called bullion or investment type, available in either an ounce of silver or an ounce of gold. The protagonist of the first was Robin Hood, the popular character who embodied the demands for justice of the oppressed classes in England. This year the protagonist is the partner of the legendary outlaw, Lady Marian, who is represented as a woman of arms to take.
The collection will first explore the story of Robin Hood, which began with the legend himself, and now focuses on his adventurous and resourceful companion Lady Marian. Sometimes described as a woman of high birth, but always a woman of the people, Lady Marian is said to have gathered valuable information that served Robin Hood and his band of men on their adventures through Sherwood Forest. This coin will be followed by another dedicated to Robin Hood's trusted companion, Little John.
Lady Marian has been depicted in a design by Jody Clark, standing vigilantly among the vegetation of Sherwood Forest, peering stealthily through the trees with a bow and a quiver of arrows on her back, ready for action.
The obverse of both coins shows the traditional portrait of Queen Elizabeth II of England, also by Jody Clark.
