This new Ukrainian coin issued on August 17 is dedicated to a complex monument that brings together architecture and history, Olesko Castle, considered the oldest building in western Ukraine and one of the most famous castles rebuilt from the ruins. Currently the Castle houses a museum where masterpieces of painting, sculpture and applied art of the Middle Ages are exhibited.

The first mentions date back to 1327 when the fortress passed to the power of Prince Trojden Yuriy who occupied the throne of the Principality of Galicia-Volynia. Olesko Castle is on the border between Volín and Galicia and that determined its importance, since the fortress was the key in the fight for those territories between Lithuania, Poland and Hungary.

In the 19th century the building was almost completely demolished after two fires and a strong earthquake. In the middle of the 20th century it was converted into a museum. Its collection features five hundred masterpieces of art dating back to the 13th and 19th centuries. Among them, paintings of battles stand out, created by famous painters commissioned by kings and other leaders. In addition, the museum has an exhibition of wooden sculptures considered one of the largest in present-day Ukraine.

The surroundings of the castle are surrounded by a multitude of trees of all kinds planted in the 16th century by order of Juan Sobieski. On its grounds there are traces of old paths, ancient sculptures and ornamental fountains.

The reverse of the coin shows the Olesko Castle and the inscriptions, at the top, ОЛЕСЬКИЙ / ЗАМОК (Olesko Castle).

The obverse of the coin features an image of Olesko Castle taken from a 19th century engraving. On the left is the small state emblem of Ukraine; to the right, an image carved in stone that is in the entrance door to the castle; below, a jagged outline, symbolizes the defensive significance of the castle in a certain period of its existence. The legends are: UKRAINE / 2021/10 GRIVNAS.
