Belonging to the series «Traditional Lithuanian festivals», the Bank of Lithuania has issued two coins with 1.5 and 5 euro facets and the same design, dedicated to the «Festival of the Sea», with differences in the type of metal, the quality in the minting and inlaying of a small amber stone in the most valuable piece.
The Sea Festival is one of the biggest, brightest and oldest organized festivals in Lithuania, this year it celebrates its 61st anniversary. The two coins dedicated to the Festival of the Sea commemorate the festival itself and pay tribute to the sea and sailors, as well as to Lithuania as a maritime state.
This event that takes place during the last weekend of July in the city of Klaipeda lasts for three full days and more than half a million people flock to the port to dance, listen to music or watch performances and plays. Every year people from all over Europe gather to enjoy themselves on the shores of the Baltic Sea.
The obverse of the coins present the coat of arms of the Republic of Lithuania, the coat of arms of Klaipeda, the inscription LIETUVA (LITHUANIA), the denomination (€ 1.50 or € 5), the year of issue (2021) and the mint mark of the Lithuanian Mint, all of them as if they were imprinted in the sand by the sea.
The reverse of the coins represent the symbols of the Festival of the Sea and Klaipeda, recreating a cozy and festive atmosphere. On the edge of the coins, there are stylized symbols representing sea waves and seagulls.
The obverse of these new collector coins were designed by Eglė Ratkutė and Adelė Žemaitienė, the reverse - by Rytas Jonas Belevičius.
