The Cherepánov steam locomotive was the first steam locomotive built in Russia. It was built in 1834 by Yefim and Miron Cherepanov (father and son), who worked as engineers at the Vyisk factory.

In 1833, the factory owners sent Miron Cherepanov on a business trip to England to familiarize himself with advanced technologies and the latest technical achievements in metallurgy. There he had the opportunity to see the George Stephenson steam locomotive, the first steam locomotive to be used in practice. An external inspection was enough for Miron to decide to build the first Russian steam locomotive when he returned home.

The genius inventors did not limit themselves to reproducing the English steam locomotive, but greatly improved its technical characteristics: they modified steam production by increasing the number of exhaust outlets and adding a reverse gear thanks to which the steam locomotive could change direction and move backwards. They also built the first Russian railway connecting the Vyisk factory and the Mednorudnyansky mine. In 1835, the Cherepanovs created a second, more powerful steam locomotive.

The first model stayed at the factory, on an abandoned road of about two kilometers that connected the factory to a nearby mine. This track was the first steam railway in Russia.

Dedicated to the first Russian steam locomotive, the Bank of Russia issued a 3-ruble silver face coin on August 16, minted in Proof quality, which opens a new series called "Inventions of Russia".

The reverse of the coin features a partially colored image of the steam locomotive driven by a worker against the background of the factory buildings; the legend 'ПАРОВОЗ ЧЕРЕПАНОВЫХ' (CHEREPÁNOV STEAM LOCOMOTIVE) appears at the top and the figure '1834' at the bottom.

The obverse of the coin shows a relief image of the Coat of Arms of the Russian Federation, on the edge is the semicircular inscription 'РОССИЙСКАЯ ФЕДЕРАЦИЯ' (RUSSIAN FEDERATION) framed on both sides by interlocking rhombuses. Below the coat of arms there are indications of the precious metal and its fineness on the left, and the fine metal content and the mint mark on the right, at the bottom in the center, in three lines, is the inscription 'БАНК РОССИИ '(BANK OF RUSSIA), the denomination of the coin' 3 РУБЛЯ '(3 RUBLES) and the year of issue' 2021 г. ' (2021).
