The German Ministry of Finance has presented the first coin of a new series that will start in 2022. The new series will be called "At the service of society" and follows the innovative line started a few years ago by incorporating a translucent polymer ring in the central area that separates the coin into two parts.

The first coin of the five in the series will be issued in April 2022 under the name «Caregivers». A piece will be broadcast every year between 2022 and 2026. The series focuses on the special importance of the professions that are indispensable for the functioning of our society and the life of each person. It is an expression of respect and appreciation for these people who always act in the interest of the common good. Each year the polymer ring will have a different color for each of the professional groups that will be represented on the coins.

This collector's coin with a face of € 10 "Caregivers" is made of a cupro-nickel alloy and a turquoise plastic ring. It has a weight of 9.8 g, a diameter of 28.75 mm and is manufactured in two minting grades: Bu and Proof. The first ones will be put on sale at their face value, while those of Proof quality will have a higher price, yet to be determined.

On the obverse, the central motif shows the hand of a vulnerable person supported by protective hands, symbolizing trust. The design also shows the complex tasks of caregivers today. The people represented on the outside of the ring make us see that the need for care can affect anyone of any generation. The legend 'PFLEGE' (Caregivers) is displayed at the bottom of the coin.

On the reverse, common to all the coins in the series, it shows an eagle, the inscription "BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND", the face value "10 EURO", the year of issue "2022", the twelve European stars and, according to the House of Currency, its mintmark "A" (Berlin), "D" (Munich), "F" (Stuttgart), "G" (Karlsruhe) and "J" (Hamburg).

The coin was designed by artists Peter Lasch (obverse) and Patrick Niesel (reverse) .

The edge of the coin is engraved with the inscription: "IM DIENST DER GESELLSCHAFT ●" (AT THE SERVICE OF SOCIETY ●).

My opinion about this specific coin, we will see with the rest of the series, is that it is a success in its recognition of the group of caregivers, professionals and non-professionals, who are rarely recognized as they deserve, both in general, as at a particular level within the world of numismatics. The issuance of this coin seems like an excellent idea to me, which can also be a nice gift to give to some of the people who surround us and are dedicated to this commendable activity, either for work or for the care of a family member.
