If there is a country that issues commemorative 2-euro coins in a way, let's say sporadic, this is Austria, which since 2004, when this type of coin began to be issued in the eurozone, has only issued seven pieces, three of a national type. and four in joint issuance. For the next issue of a common commemorative coin scheduled for 2022 for the "35th Anniversary of the Erasmus Program", we assumed that if it would participate, something that we can already affirm today and also know what its volume of issue will be. As for the date, there is no secret since all the participating Mint Houses agreed that on July 1, 2022 all the coins will be put into circulation or for sale according to the presentation in which they are issued.

The design of the coin is a mixture of two main elements of the Erasmus program: the original intellectual inspiration, Erasmus himself, and the allegory of his influence in Europe. The first is symbolized by one of the best known representations of Erasmus. The second is symbolized by a bundle of links that crosses the coin from one lighthouse to another, representing the numerous intellectual and human exchanges between European students.

As a reference to Europe, some of these links form other stars, born from the synergy between the countries. Figure 35, for the 35th anniversary, emerges from the stars in a contemporary graphic style.

The issue volume for the Austrian piece is 1,060,000 coins. One million will be destined for circulation and the remaining sixty thousand will be presented in cases and wallets destined for collectors.
