Literature and satire come together in the Bank of Russia's latest coin issue. On January 20, the institution released a new commemorative 2-ruble silver coin dedicated to the Russian satirical writer and journalist Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin, marking the bicentenary of his birth.
Obverse
The obverse of the coin features a relief image of the National Coat of Arms of the Russian Federation. Above it, along the edge, is the semicircular inscription "РОССИЙСКАЯ ФЕДЕРАЦИЯ" (Russian Federation), framed by paired diamonds on either side. Below the coat of arms, on the left, are the chemical symbol and the purity of the metal, and on the right, the fine metal content and the mint mark. In the lower center, in three lines, are the inscription "БАНК РОССИИ" (Bank of Russia), the face value of the coin "РУБЛЯ" (2 Rubles), and the year of issue "2026".
Reverse
The reverse of the piece features a portrait of Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin accompanied by figures of the governors of Foolsville, from his novel History of a Town, and the inscriptions around the composition: "M.E. SALTYKOV-SHCHEDRIN" on the right and "1826–1889" at the bottom left.
