The Bank of Estonia issued a commemorative silver coin with a face value of 15 euros on Friday, January 23, dedicated to the Estonian athletes participating in the XXV Winter Olympic Games in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, which will be held between February 6 and 22 in the Italian cities.
This issue is part of the Bank of Estonia's long Olympic tradition in the field of numismatics, which began in 1992. With this new piece, the institution now has fourteen Olympic-themed coins, having previously issued thirteen coins dedicated to the Games.
The coin's design emphasizes the founding ideal of the Olympic movement, according to which sport not only serves to determine who is the best, but also to unite nations, communities, and individuals.
The idea of inclusion is reflected in the coin as a visual metaphor, highlighting that a great sporting result is not solely the athlete's achievement, but also the team's work, the public's support, the competitors' presence, and the fans' involvement.
In this sense, the Olympic Games are presented as a shared event, belonging to everyone.
Obverse
The obverse of the coin features, in the center, the coat of arms of the Republic of Estonia. This is framed by the year of issue, "2026," and the legend "EESTI VABARIIK" (Republic of Estonia), which is also inscribed in Braille in the upper part of the design, above the shield, playing with the symbolism of falling snow. This alludes to the fact that each snowflake is unique, but together they form a whole, just as differences can create a solid and integrated unity.
Reverse
The reverse of the coin features a footprint in the snow on the left side, resembling a boot sole, which also functions as a QR code leading to the Estonian Olympic Committee website. Next to this is the face value "€15" and above it, the official logo of the Estonian Olympic Committee.
