On January 29, a new commemorative €2 coin will be issued in Germany dedicated to Bremen, a federal state with a rich cultural and scientific history. This coin is part of the “Federal States II” (Bundesländer II) series, which began in 2023 with the aim of honoring each of the German states annually with a commemorative €2 coin. The series celebrates the cultural identity and regional characteristics of each state, continuing the successful “Bundesländer” series (2006–2022).

The Klimahaus Bremerhaven: The Heart of Design

The main motif on the 2026 coin is the Klimahaus Bremerhaven (Bremerhaven Climate House), a futuristic complex that represents the connection between science, the environment, and interactive experiences. Located in the port of Bremerhaven, this institution is a center for scientific research and outreach that allows visitors to travel through different climate zones of the world, experiencing diverse weather conditions and learning about global climate change. The Klimahaus is not only an architectural landmark but also a symbol of Bremen's commitment to sustainability and environmental education.

The Coin

The coin's design, created by Berlin artist Bodo Broschat, strikingly captures the essence of this complex. The coin's image shows a perspective from below, highlighting the Klimahaus 's architectural structure . The glass bridge, the elliptical exhibition building, and the tower blend harmoniously, forming a spectacular image that reflects the complex's dynamism and modernity. The view depicted on the coin illustrates how the building's ship-like architecture integrates with its proximity to the sea, reinforcing Bremen's maritime identity.

In addition to the structure, the design features two seagulls flying in the sky, a nod to marine life and the city's connection to the North Sea, as well as a reference to the port of Bremerhaven, which has historically been a key center for international trade and navigation.

Technical Details and Elements of the Coin

The Bremen commemorative €2 coin features several distinctive elements that make it unique. On the obverse, in addition to the depiction of the Klimahaus (Climate House ), several engraved details can be found: the inscription “BREMEN”, the country code “D” indicating Germany as the issuer, the mint mark of the respective mint (A, D, F, G, or J), and the year “2026”. These elements provide clear and official identification of the coin.

The twelve stars of the European Union encircle the outer ring of the national side of the coin, representing Germany's membership in the European bloc and reflecting the unity among member nations. Furthermore, the European side of the coin is the standard design of the €2 coins in circulation since 2007, featuring a map of Europe without national borders, underscoring the idea of unity and cooperation on the continent.

The edge of the coin features the embossed inscription “UNITY, JUSTICE AND FREEDOM”, along with the stylized federal eagle, symbols that represent the fundamental values of the Federal Republic of Germany.

The Legacy of the Coin and Its Impact

The issuance of this commemorative €2 coin not only pays tribute to the city of Bremen and its Klimahaus (Climate House) , but also highlights the importance of science and research in a global context. The Bremerhaven Klimahaus is dedicated to educating people about climate change and its effects on the planet, a topic of crucial relevance today. This coin serves as a call to raise awareness about the environment and the need to take action against climate change, an issue that transcends national borders and is of global importance.

The issuance volume for this coin is 30 million, distributed among the five mints that Germany has.

Apart from those distributed by German banks in rolls of 25 coins, there are these two presentations intended for collectors.
