Once again, our colleague Paul, Euromunter, is ahead of the curve and has revealed the two commemorative €2 coins that Portugal will issue this year. Thanks to him, we now know the chosen motifs, the official designs, and the mintages of these two new coins. And be warned, because one of them, due to its limited issue, won't be easy to find.

2 euro coin commemorating 100 years of Rotary in Portugal

The first of the commemorative 2 euro coins will be dedicated to the centenary of Rotary's presence in Portugal, which is commemorated between 1926 and 2026.

Rotary is an international humanitarian and social organization that, since its arrival in Portugal, has carried out extensive work in areas such as education, health, international cooperation, and aid to disadvantaged groups. Over these one hundred years, its activities have had a significant impact on numerous communities throughout the country.

Design and meaning

Official design

The coin's design employs symbolic language. Stylized human figures surround a sphere in the center, representing planet Earth and the unity of people. The overlapping hands evoke cooperation and mutual support, while the gear, a traditional Rotary symbol, reinforces the idea of teamwork and social commitment.

The design is completed by inscriptions with the name of the organization, the issuing country and the year of issue, along with the twelve stars of the European Union on the outer crown.

2 euro coin commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation

The second commemorative coin will be dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, one of the most important cultural and philanthropic institutions in Portugal and Europe.

Founded in 1956, the foundation has been key in promoting art, science, education and charity, supporting museums, cultural projects, scientific research and educational programs that have transcended Portuguese borders.

Design and symbolism

Official design

The central motif of the coin depicts the four-horse chariot, the foundation's historical emblem. This symbol represents dynamism, progress, and a vision for the future. Alongside it appear the anniversary dates and the name of the institution.

The design also includes the words art, charity, science and education, which summarize the four fundamental pillars on which the foundation's activity has been based since its creation.
