Yesterday, January 2nd, The Royal Mint officially released the 2026 coin sets, available in various qualities and presentations. These collections, always eagerly awaited by collectors, not only include the UK's current coins—whose design was completely revamped in 2023—but also five new commemorative issues intended for everyday circulation.

We begin this journey with a particularly attractive piece: a 2 pound bimetallic coin celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Zoological Society of London, a key institution in the history of wildlife conservation and study worldwide.

The other side: institutional continuity

The obverse features the official portrait of King Charles III, a work by the sculptor Martin Jennings, which is now standard on newly issued British coins. The bust, sober and realistic, faces left, following the British numismatic tradition of alternating the orientation with respect to the previous monarch. Surrounding the effigy is the legend with the sovereign's name, his title and the face value, all elegantly framed on the golden core of the bimetallic piece.

The reverse: a visual tribute to biodiversity

The main design (reverse) shows three animal species that symbolize the ZSL's conservation impact: a Sumatran tiger (in the center, with detailed head and intense gaze), a Socorro dove (on the left, pecking at a branch) and a Partula snail (at the bottom, with its spiral shell).

These species represent success stories: the critically endangered tiger, the pigeon that was extinct in the wild and is maintained through breeding programs in zoos, and the snail that was nearly wiped out by invasive predators but has been reintroduced. In the background, a globe with meridian and parallel lines emphasizes global conservation work. Circular inscription: “1826 · Zoological Society of London · 2026”. Edge inscription: “Restoring Wildlife Together,” reflecting the ZSL’s current mission.
