Few coins dedicated to the figure of a boxer have been issued in the world. The latest to join this select club is boxer Oleksandr Usyk, to whom his country, Ukraine, has just dedicated a coin highlighting the achievements of Ukrainian sportsmen.
This coin pays tribute to the outstanding achievements of Ukrainian athletes who have made Ukraine famous on the world stage: from the first legendary records to the triumphant victory of boxer Oleksandr Usyk, who became the absolute world heavyweight champion in May 2024, simultaneously holding four of the most prestigious boxing belts, demonstrating to the world the indomitable spirit, fortitude and unlimited possibilities of Ukrainians. This coin pays tribute to the exploits of Ukrainian athletes and reminds that even in the most difficult times Ukrainians are capable of achieving great victories.
Reverse of the coin: in the centre is a stylised image of the athlete against the background of the outline of the Motherland Monument, a symbol of the invincibility and strength of the Ukrainian people. Below, to the left of the boxer's outline, is the inscription 18.05./2024 (18 May 2024, the day of the fight that made him the absolute heavyweight champion); on both sides of the boxer's outline are the inscriptions АБСОЛЮТНИЙ and UNDISPUTED (Undisputed).
Obverse of the coin: On a plain background there is a traditional Crimean Tatar ornament depicting the ancestry of Oleksandr Usyk. This motif, which was carefully selected and used by Ukrainian designer Elvira Hasanova as one of the images of the athlete in the pre-match confrontation for the title of undisputed world champion, emphasizes the inextricable connection between Crimea and Ukraine. Above, to the right of the ornament, are the year of issue of the coin (2024) and the small coat of arms of Ukraine. Below, to the right, are the legend УКРАЇНА (Ukraine), the face value of the coin 5, the graphic symbol of the hryvnia and the mint mark of the Banknote Printing and Minting House of the National Bank of Ukraine.
