Continuing the series of collector coins dedicated to Nobel Prize winners of Hungarian origin started in 2012, on June 19 the National Bank of Hungary, Magyar Nemzeti Bank (MNB), issued the eighth and ninth coins of this series. The two new oval coins pay tribute to biochemist Katalin Karikó, the first Hungarian woman to win the Nobel Prize, and to Ferenc Krausz, winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics. Both collector's items are issued in two versions, one minted in silver with a face value of 7,500 forints, and a cheaper version made of cupro-nickel with a face value of 3,000 forints.
Katalin Kariko
In 2023, Karikó became the first Hungarian researcher to win the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, together with Drew Weissmann, for laying the foundations for mRNA-based medicine. The latter, among other things, made possible the rapid development and practical application of new types of coronavirus vaccines. Her further research focuses on the injection of RNA into tumors, autoimmune diseases, and vaccination against cancer diseases. Katalin Karikó was awarded the title of “Honorary Doctor of Science” by the University of Szeged, and she is a member of 10 academies, including the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, as well as a recipient of the Széchenyi Prize and the Order of St. Stephen of Hungary.
Karikó has so far received more than 130 Hungarian and international awards and recognitions in honour of her pioneering and globally significant work in the field of biochemistry.
The reverse of the first collector's coin features a portrait of the researcher Karikó Katalin. To the right of the portrait, in three lines, are the inscriptions "Nobel-" and "-díj" ("Nobel Prize"), as well as the year 2023 (the year in which the Nobel Prize was awarded), while on the left side we see the inscription "KARIKÓ KATALIN", under the signature of the coin's sculptor, Mihály Fritz.
The obverse features a stylised representation of the spiral of a modified messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) molecule. Below this, on the left side, are the inscription of the issuing country “MAGYARORSZÁG” (Hungary), the face value, the mint mark “BP”, and the year of issue “2024”. The mark of the designer, András Szilos, is also displayed on the lower edge.

Ferenc Krausz
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physics to Ferenc Krausz, Pierre Agostini and Anne L'Huillier for their experimental methods that generate attosecond pulses of light to study the dynamics of electrons in matter. Their findings make it possible to observe and measure rapid, short-term phenomena that could not previously be studied accurately.
Ferenc Krausz is highly acclaimed in both theoretical and experimental physics. He is currently Director of the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics in Germany, Head of the Department of Experimental Physics at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich, and a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences since 2007.
The reverse of the second collector coin shows a portrait of the Nobel Prize-winning scientist Ferenc Krausz. To the left of the portrait, in two separate lines, there is again the inscription “NOBEL-DÍJ” (Nobel Prize) and the year 2023, the year of the award of the prize, as well as the inscription “KRAUSZ FERENC” along the edge. On the right side of the design we see the brand of the designer, Balázs Bió.
The obverse of the coin, on the other hand, shows a stylized representation of a light pulse “scanned” using what is called “Attosecond Streaking”, considered a basic tool of the attosecond measurement technique. Surrounding this central motif is the inscription of the name of the issuing country “MAGYARORSZÁG” (Hungary), the face value, the mint mark “BP”, and the year of issue “2024”.
