The third coin in the "American Innovation" series issued this year by the United States Mint, features the Erie Canal, located in New York State. The issuance of this 1 dollar coin is announced for next August 31.

Completed in 1825, the Erie Canal (currently part of the New York State Canal System) is a historic waterway in the northern United States, within the state of New York. It ranges from Buffalo (New York) on Lake Erie to Albany on the Hudson River, connecting the Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean.

Considered an engineering marvel of its time, the canal opened the western interior for trade and settlement, and played a pivotal role in the development of the state and the nation.

The design on the reverse depicts a boat loaded with merchandise being dragged from a city in the east to rural areas in the west.

Designed by Justin Kunz and engraved by Phebe Hemphill, the obverse features the same design common to the entire series, featuring the image of the Statue of Liberty in profile and the inscriptions "$ 1" and "IN GOD WE TRUST" (IN GOD WE TRUST).
 

The coins of this series show the year of minting or issue, the mint mark and the text "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (of many, one) on the edge of the coins.
